Living with Autism: A Few Questions for the Community
Living with Autism: A Few Questions for the Community
Hey everyone 👋 I hope you’re all well and had an amazing weekend! 😀
Wishing you a great week ahead too.
Today, I want to talk a little about my Autism and reach out to the community for some help and insight.
When I was diagnosed with Autism, my first thought was, “Brilliant — this explains so much!” It helped me understand why I was the way I was as a child, and why I react or feel the way I do now.
Since my diagnosis, I’ve noticed a few things and I’d really love to hear from anyone who is autistic, cares for someone with Autism, or works in the field.
Here are a few questions I’ve been thinking about:
- Crowded settings:
When I’m in a crowd, I start to feel anxious and uneasy. I often find myself looking around to focus on something specific, or tapping my fingers on my legs to help calm down. Is this normal? I’ve noticed it happening more often lately. - Childhood memories:
I’ve also been finding myself curious — sometimes even fixated — on things from my childhood that affected me. It can stop me from doing things in the present. Is that common for others too? - Trying new foods:
Since being diagnosed, I’ve been thinking about trying new foods and pushing myself to step out of my comfort zone. I’d love to know — would you recommend this, or is it better to take things slowly?
These are just a few things I’ve been struggling with recently, and I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts, advice, or experiences.
Thank you all so much for your support and kindness ❤️
As always — take care, and I’ll see you in the next one! 🙏

Dear John
Well thought out Blog.
1. I do not like crowds / trying to process all the interactions is quite stimulating, however, can cause overwhelm and I kind of go quiet and shutdown a bit. I move my fingers in a pattern when trying to process a lot.
2. I think I might have a photographic memory when the images I have seen from my past surface. It helps me make decisions in the present for future outcome. So these memories are not debilitating they are helpful. I suppose even what might be bad memories are helpful in strategy and functional conversation.
3. I have always been adventurous with food. That, I expect, comes from having grown up in Australasia. I think an open mind with some philosophical and community building ideas goes with different food types too.
Nice post. Quite thought provoking. I wonder if we can gauge some other peoples opinions too.
